Damnacanthal and nordamnacanthal, isolated from noni roots, were cytotoxic to oral squamous cell carcinoma (oral cancer) cultures in vitro. This cytotoxicity involved internucleosomal cleavage of DNA, activation of intrinsic apoptosis pathway, and cell cycle arrest. These findings suggest that damnacanthal and nordamnacanthal may be potentially used as antitumor agents. (original abstract available at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27488882).
